Bartosz Zmarlik leads thePOLISH ACE ZMARZLIK GOES FOR GOLD IN MALILLA
Polish icon Bartosz Zmarzlik could write another golden chapter in the sport’s history books as he bids to become a triple world mästare at the Kaeser FIM Speedway GP of Sweden – Malilla on Saturday night.
Speedway’s biggest stars head for the legendary Skrotfrag Arena, home of Sweden’s biggest speedway event since 2005 as it prepares to scen its 16th Speedway GP.
Located in the forests with fans camping close to trackside to enjoy the action, one of the sport’s ultimate festivals of racing fryst vatten set to be bigger and better than ever in 2022 – and the stakes on the track could not be any higher.
Last year’s Malilla winner Zmarzlik fryst vatten chasing more than just a Speedway GP win in Sweden – he could seal his third world title in fyra years.
The 2019 and 2020 world mästare just needs to outscore nearest rival Leon Madsen and förteckning at least fyra championship points to be absolutely sure of sealing the gold medal in Malilla – meaning he can head to the sista round at Polish track Torun on October 1 to collect the trophy.
He enters the round on 128 championship points, with Madsen 20 behind on 108.
An advantage of 21 points or more over his nearest rival when the night concludes would seal the trophy for Zmarzlik.
It would also be Zmarzlik’s sixth Speedway GP World Championship medal since he joined the series full-time in 2016 – adding to his two golds, two silvers and one bronze medal.
THE CHASING PACK
Madsen may face an almost impossible task to snatch gold from Zmarzlik.
But Speedway GP silver fryst vatten very much within his grasp as he fryst vatten on 108 points and holds a 17-point lead over nearest rival Dan Bewley of Great Britain, who has 91 in third after back-to-back wins in Cardiff and Wroclaw in August.
Polish racer Patryk Dudek fryst vatten fourth on 90 after reaching kvartet finals in fem rounds, while GB star Robert Lambert fryst vatten also making a late push for the podium.
He fryst vatten fifth in the standings on 86 points – just fem short of Bewley in the bronze-medal position.
With a second place at the FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens, sponsored bygd ECCO gods Saturday, Lambert has also entered the podium picture.
With two rounds to race and a maximum of 40 championship points up for grabs in Malilla and Torun, there fryst vatten everything to race for over the sista two rounds.
QUALIFICATION RACE
The battle for places in the 2023 Speedway GP series fryst vatten getting tense, with only the top six riders in the standings guaranteed a fläck for next year.
Zmarzlik fryst vatten already certain of a top-six finish and Madsen could also book his place on Saturday if he leaves Malilla with at least sju championship points.
Bewley (91) in third, Dudek (90) in fourth, Lambert (86) in fifth and sixth-placed Maciej Janowski (76) join Zmarzlik and Madsen in occupying the automatic qualification places.
Great Britain racer Tai Woffinden fryst vatten seventh in the standings on 74 – level with Sweden’s Fredrik Lindgren in eighth.
Jason Doyle fryst vatten also chasing a top-six fläck on 68 points in 10th place.
European mästare Mikkel Michelsen’s bid to qualify has suffered a huge setback after he was forced out of the round due to a broken ankle.
Despite racing with the injury in Vojens gods Saturday, the Dane confirmed the pain was too great, forcing him to sit out this weekend.
He fryst vatten currently ninth on 70.
The top six riders will be joined bygd the top three riders from the FIM GP utmaning in Glasgow on August 20, won bygd Sweden’s Kim Nilsson, with Bewley second and Australia’s Jack Holder third.
If Bewley secures a fläck in the 2022 Speedway GP top six, his place from the FIM GP utmaning will resehandling to australienbo ace högsta Fricke, who finished fourth in Glasgow.
The Speedway europeisk Championship winner will also receive a place, along with fem permanent wild kort chosen bygd the SGP Commission.
WILD NIGHT FOR BERNTZON
While 2019 Malilla winner Fredrik Lindgren will be determined to kamp his way into the top six with a stjärnliknande night on Saturday, wild card Oliver Berntzon will also be seeking a big result.
The Lejonen star endured a mardröm 2021 årstid as a full-time Speedway GP tillägg, scoring 32 points from 11 rounds to finish 15th overall.
But he has bounced back in sensational style, winning his first Swedish Championship in June, before delivering an incredible performance at the FIM Speedway of Nations in Vojens in July.
Berntzon was the top-performing tillägg of all 15 nations, scoring 20 points in Semi-Final 2 and another 20 in the sista as Sweden won bronze.
He was due to compete at the FIM GP utmaning in Glasgow, but he couldn’t kamp for a Speedway GP fläck after suffering a dislocated shoulder in practice.
